Getty Images is preparing to release its first collection of images on ‘Candy,’ a marketplace built on Palm Blockchain. The offering will include rare archival images that have never been released before, as well as images from partnerships with prominent US sports organizations, including basketball leagues, NASCAR and professional wrestling organization WWE. The archival collection comprises more than 135 million images in a range of formats, including some analog photographs, several of which will be released digitally for the first time on the platform.
Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images, said, “Getty Images recognizes the importance of NFTs as an emerging market and as a way to build a dedicated customer base through high-quality, distinctive images.” Scott Lawin, CEO of Candy Digital, added, “This partnership gives Candy the opportunity to introduce new NFTs that combine culture and history beyond the world of sports.”
For the launch of the new image collection next month, Getty Images said Photography NFTs are more niche than NFTs such as Bored Apes, CryptoPunks and Okay Bears, while also being more environmentally friendly. ConsenSys, which supports Palm Blockchain, confirmed that transactions use more than 99% less energy than those on other blockchains. The NFTs can also be used across blockchains through Uniswap or other crypto wallets such as MetaMask.
The NFT market and community are clearly very large, but photography still appears to have limited popularity in the trading market and has yet to establish a strong presence in the Metaverse. Even when looking at the trading market, the first 100 most popular collections on OpenSea include similar types of images, but no NFT collection in the form of a photography series. It will therefore be worth watching whether Getty Images can expand its presence on the Candy marketplace on a broad scale. If it succeeds, both creators and collectors could generate substantial additional value from the market.
